We've been contacted by lawyer Peter Garsden who is spearheading a
campaign to abolish the time limit on claiming civil compensation from
people who have raped or sexually assaulted children, many of whom are
unable to sue for compensation until much later in their lives.
- Many people can't get compensation from the rapist because the
man has no money but if he does, why should he get away with it
and why should you be limited as to when you can get it?
- It often takes years before you are willing or able to speak
about sexual assaults or abuse you suffer as a child. Why should
you be penalised further for the devastating effects such assaults
so often have, and the long hard struggle you make to get yourself
together and be able to take action?
- Note: Suing your attacker for compensation is different from
claiming from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, which
is state funded (which also has a time limit, but it can be waived
at the Authority's discretion).
